and why

What A Giraffe?

What A Giraffe is a venture created as a hub for creativity, which we wish to give free rein to. Founded by Ewa Skórska, it is intended to be a unifying point for her activities (of all kinds!) – from translations, through theatre workshops, to the organisation of artistic events.

  • Founder of WHAT A GIRAFFE and originator of the LAGOM NA PÓŁNOCY workshops

A translator of Russian literature for over a quarter of a century and, for a slightly shorter period, of English-language novels, she speaks four languages and is learning more. She has been involved in amateur theatre for over a decade, writes articles and scripts, stages amateur performances, and currently works with a group of women in the north. An activist who is committed to and friends with young people, she loves the works of Astrid Lindgren, Tove Jansson and Lars Lerin.

Privately, she has an adult son (in Warsaw), two black and white cats and a dog named Kermit (with her) and dozens of potted plants that are slowly taking over the space, not only in her home. She is always on the lookout for new mugs, loves giraffes, snow, sledging, skiing, playing games, loppis and conversations. A sociable introvert, a bit of a writer and a very vegan, she tries to grow radishes, lettuce and sunflowers, plants avocados in pots, occasionally co-hosts Lutheran masses, discovers, finds and PLANS.

She came up with the idea of travelling workshops out of a deep need to share what she considers most beautiful: snowdrifts under the stars, the aurora borealis, silence, respect and tranquillity.

She lives in Boliden, in northern Sweden, ‘on planet Winter’.

  • Creator and implementer of workshop activities

A scriptwriter who creates scripts for amateur theatre groups, a director of amateur performances with many years of experience working with people of all ages, she describes herself as ‘first and foremost a theatre instructor’.

For her, theatre is about relationships with people and emotions. Theatre is about inventing, getting into character, experiencing different perspectives. It is a return to childhood. A metaphor. Communication.

Creating theatre led her to psychoeducation: she is a graduate of the School of Psychological Training and Workshop at the INTRA Psychological Assistance and Education Centre in Warsaw, as well as a graduate of the Non-Violent Communication (NVC) study programme.

She runs workshops on empathic communication for adults and children, workshops on positive discipline for parents and teachers, and theatre workshops. Her passion is amateur theatre, and recently, exploring the difficult art of communication.

Privately, she has a partner and two teenage daughters (a real testing ground for communication!) and three cats: Zen teachers. She likes to read, travel and feel a sense of purpose in all her activities. She is fascinated by how the surrounding chaos ultimately transforms into cosmos.

She wants to create workshops in Sweden because she adores Ewa and her creative nature, because the late-night bonfire in snowy Boliden touched her heart, and because she believes in the power of meetings and conversation.

She works, invents and creates in Olsztyn, Poland.

  • Photographer and social media specialist

A talented amateur actor, cinema and theatre lover, as well as a coffee fanatic and cinnamon bun devotee, he follows current events in the world of politics and pop culture, loves music and explores sociological issues. In short, he has his finger on the pulse.

A fan of Tim Burton, Lady Gaga and Winnie the Pooh, he is also a seasoned mediator, capable of controlling the greatest chaos and defusing any situation. Recently a student of Finnish philology at the University of Warsaw and an employee of a boutique chain, he is currently a sound engineer at a Lutheran church and a gardener, expanding his knowledge of vegan gluten-free baking, studying Swedish, discovering the wild landscape of the North and taking up skiing.

He is involved in the LAGOM IN THE NORTH project because he has known Ewa for almost 10 years and has had the opportunity to work with her on many theatre and workshop projects.

He lives in Boliden in northern Sweden.
